How is Whole Blood, Leukocytes Reduced produced?

    • Approximately 450mL of whole blood in CPD is collected from male, Group O donors that pass all donor testing criteria, including low (less than 1/128 equivalent) anti-A and anti-B isohemagglutinin titres. 
    • Leukodepletion is achieved using the Terumo BCT Imuflex WB-SP filter set which contains a leukocyte-depleting/platelet-sparing filter.
    • The filtered product is stored at 1-6 °C for up to 21 days.
    • It is not irradiated.

    Is Whole Blood, Leukocytes Reduced available for use in Canada now?

    • As of October 2022, Canadian Blood Services will provide the Canadian Armed Forces with Whole Blood, Leukocytes Reduced.
    • A subcommittee of the National Advisory Committee on Blood and Blood Products is soliciting feedback to inform recommendations for use in non-military applications.
